THE KITEBOARDER MAGAZINE - June, 2007

H-Wood and his crew have rallied together to produce an entertaining documentary of the history, culture, and colorful characters that makes Santa Cruz unique. Taking Davenport reveals the inside scoop on the impromptu invasion of Davenport, a favorite spot for windsurfers, by a swarm of kiters who descended like killer bees to claim their right to ride the spot. A glimpse at local history explains the shift from surfing to windsurfing and then to kitesurfing as the tool of choice. There is plenty of classic Santa Cruz wave riding footage along with a flail and bail section all to the beat of homegrown cover tunes.

THE KITEBOARDER MAGAZINE
"The Making of TAKING DAVENPORT" - June, 2007

The idea for Testimony III: Taking Davenport was hatched when an incident involving windsurfer localism against kitesurfers at Davenport, happened to be caught on tape. A plot was born when Santa Cruz kitesurfers, many of them ex-windsurfers including videographer and local rider H-Wood, decided to prove a point: nobody owns the ocean and they descended on Davenport to claim their right to kite the spot.

H-Wood and the crew at H-Wood Productions want to emphasize that the film doesn't just focus on the confrontation. In fact, it plays a small role. Taking Davenport is more about presenting the North Coast to viewers in a way that few have ever seen. It's packed with endless wave riding sequences, coastal scenic shots and follows some of the unique personalities that make up the Santa Cruz kitesurfing scene.

H-Wood is quick to point out that the situation documented at Davenport was done "Tongue-in-cheek," and much of it is about poking fun at their friends. . . "We wanted to playfully jab the windsurfers in the ribs, because there were some incidents where certain people were taking themselves entirely too seriously." He said, "Keep in mind that the kitesurfers in this film were all windsurfers going back to the heart of the Davenport scene in the early days and have long-time friendships with many of their old windsurfing friends. Most have seen the movie and found the humor. . . "

ZEEV GUR - KITEFORUM.COM 3/27/2006
Just the other day I was driving in Tahoe with my 23 month old son Jared, who was feeling kind of salty……tough night for the big man…….he was asking me to put on “Thomas The Cho Cho” on the cars dvd player.

While I was not able to meet his request, I did pop in “TIII: Taking Davenport” the new movie from H-Wood productions. I would have been stoked if he watched for 5 minutes, instead I had a fascinated boy pointing and saying “wave”, “board” and “kite” and 45 minutes later I was treated to “again, pease daddy”. That is in a nutshell, the review of this movie.

This is hands down the most hard core wave kiting “video story” made to date. It captures some of the very skilled athletes who have chosen to evolve. The documentary of their evolution, and the wave riding skills that accompany this evolution, earn the “video story” a permanent place in your library of movies you watch, frequently. . .

This movie is homegrown in North California and really good!!! It must be the sun in California…….In my past reviews of other movies I pick out my favorite sequence and describe what makes it memorable and worth your time to watch. In this case, it’s nearly impossible. To pick out just one sequence would be unkind, as there is so much truly mind blowing footage. . .

…..One of the many elements that makes this movie stand out is that it’s not shot in some exotic location where only a few people ever get to kite, that can be hard to relate to. Most of us can’t fly around the world hoping that forecasts are right……we typically show up at the beach and hope the conditions come together….sometimes our cell phone fairies give us a heads up so we can better plan our days……The kiting in this movie is what your friends do, if they live around Santa Cruz and rip in the waves that is………it’s super approachable…….easy to imagine yourself on that wave…..

……The styles are powerful, smooth and varied. You have people carving powerful bottom turns, scooping the gutter with their right hands, and hitting the lip hard. Getting air off the lip. Combining fluid freestyle with killer wave riding. You see some of the best goofy foot riding anywhere – crushing hits with floaty airs, all while backside…….

Good winds + waves, Zeev.

ANONYMOUS WINDSURFER POSTS
IWINDSURF FORUM - APRIL, 2007

Has anyone seen the trailer or any excerpt from this neo surf nazi film? I have always been and always will be very tolerant of kitesurfers, and I don't want to stir anything up, but I am upset and insulted about the intolerant, hostile, insecure, immature and self-abosorbed attitude that this film exemplifies. Do the producers of the film honestly feel that the money they might make from it is worth the bad vibes they will spawn? I like people. I don't understand the need for hateful nonsense like that.
